When we talk about hosting web servers, there are three major varieties - shared website hosting web servers, VPS (virtual private web servers) and dedicated hosting servers. Shared hosting servers host numerous clients and hence the system resources per hosting account are restricted, virtual private server accounts give you more server configuration liberty, but also affect other private virtual web servers on the hardware node if used heedlessly, and dedicated servers give you the possibility to do everything you please without interfering with anyone else.

Why would you require a dedicated hosting server?

Dedicated servers are commonly much more expensive than shared hosting servers or private virtual web servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The explanation is rather simple. If your company has a heavy resource-absorbing online portal, or just has very exact web server architecture requirements, the right option would be a dedicated server. For someone who is inclined to invest in safety and dependability, the greater price is of no concern. You receive root-level access and can use 100% of the hosting server's system resources without anyone else utilizing these system resources and interfering with your web sites.

Hardware architectures

The majority of shared hosting providers, incl. us at Depzo, provide several hardware configurations you can choose from based on your demands. The hardware configurations offer different types of microprocessors, a different amount of cores, different RAM and hard drive sizes and different traffic quotas. You can pick a hosting CP, which is a convenient graphical user interface if you would like to use the dedicated web server for hosting purposes solely and choose not to resort to an SSH console for all the changes you will be making. We provide three types of hosting CP software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The hosting CP of your preference

If you are a self-reliant Linux OS user (our servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based OSs), you could manage your dedicated server through an SSH connection only. That, however, could be awkward, particularly if you decide to give full server root privileges to somebody else who has less technical abilities than yourself. That is why having web hosting CP software installed is a nice idea. The Hepsia web hosting CP tool that we provide does not offer root privileges and is mostly suitable for somebody who owns plenty of web portals that demand plenty of resources, but would rather administer the web portals, databases and email aliases using a user-friendly web hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel hosting CPs, on the other hand, give you root-level access and have three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell hosting accounts instead of utilizing the dedicated server just for yourself, you should select one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated hosting server and of backing it up. In case of a predicament with your server, such as an unresponsive Apache or a downtime, it is advisable to have some kind of monitoring system enabled. Here at Depzo the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated hosting server as well. Backups are also an extra feature - the web hosting distributor offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could pick a type of RAID that would permit you to save the very same data on 2 hard disk drives as a precaution in case of a server hard drive failure, or in case someone whom you have given full root-level access deletes something by accident.
